The Great Depression Period - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 3 Words: 935 Downloads: 2 Date added: 2019/05/03 Category History Essay Level High school Topics: Great Depression Essay Did you like this example? The great depression was a time period when more than 15 million people were unemployed and money lost its value. It was a bad time period for everyone around the world and could have been avoided if everyone didnt start buying stock on black tuesday because thats how we lost the money. The great depression was caused by many things and it also caused many things, here are some of the ways that the great depression affected the United States of America. The wall street crash was one of the main reasons of the great depression this is where many bought stocks at a time and crashed and what was in was all lost and was never recovered. This caused black thursday which was where share prices in new york completely collapsed losing all of it also. This was huge because we made the same mistake twice and if we didnt, we would not have been so deep in the loss. This means money lost value causing many to become homeless and many to commit suicide because of the fear of the world ending. The places the homeless lived and the things they used were called hoovervilles or started with hoover because they were separated at the time by how much money you had. The things they used where named after the president of that time period. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "The Great Depression Period" essay for you Create order Hoover was the president during the time and did a lot to help get everyone through the horrible time period that the great depression was. He used the newly created tv to reach citizens of america with his fireside chats to where he would talk to them about stocks and make it better for the people and to keep their minds off what was happening. Many would look up to him and be so happy when he would come on the black and white screen. He was one of the forms of entertainment at the time. The people need something cheap and fun to do so they started playing card games listening to the radio and watching the tv if they had one. Monopoly was a game that came out during the time and it was a huge hit. The people liked the feel of being able to control things and liked the feel of having more money than in real life. Some stories that came out where also a hit like the three little pigs and the wizard of oz. There was one special storie out of all the rest it was one of a farmer. The story is that a farmer couldnt afford feed for his sheep so instead of watching them starve he slit their throats and sold the fur and ate them for the next month so he didnt starve also like the sheep wouldve. This story was famous because it meant something and everyone thought it was relatable to what was going on at the time. The great depression is a miraculous thing of how we didnt see it coming. My theory is that we saw it coming but were so bluntly dumb that we didnt see it or they just shrugged it off. They spent all there money on stock when it was falling because they wanted to make money but instead they just lost it all and suffered from it. This caused much tragedy and caused homeless to have to go to desperate measures. Many believe that during the great depression the homeless had their own language called the hobo indenginess language this was the way they wrote things to show who lives here and what building is this and they would have hung above there tents. This was a smart idea for newcomers to the hooverville. They could also use normal writing but i get how they used that to save on ink. Money saving was the way you had to live during the great depression. If you found a penny on the street you keep (this was rare because a penny was like a dollar now) they had to buy something and make the most out of it. You kept the shoes you had from the 3rd grade to give to someone else for a few cents. This was the way they had to live during the time and it was horrible. Back then you could buy a hotel room and breakfast for a day for 6 cents which isnt alot in todays current economy. The money in todays economy is fifteen times what it was back then. So you could get a coke for a dollar then but now days it would be fifteen dollars. This is a incredible thing and shows how much the world has changed. And means if you found a penny back then you found fifteen of them. Back then they tried to change the way we count money. During the great depression they tried to change the fact that one cent is one cent. They also tried to do a fraction of a cent or a fraction of a dollar other than just it being one coin. This is a crazy thought because what would you do if you needed a penny but only had a few quarters of one. In conclusion the great depression was a very bad time period. The stock crashed making money lesser valued. The suicide rates jumped and many had no jobs. In my mind I think it could have been avoided but hey thats just a theory. The president turned corrupt and everything went wrong with the economy. But thats what the great depression was just everything going wrong.

The ones I wish to incorporate into my curriculum are those of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, who believed that everyone posses in the depth of our being certain feelings and passions, and when these feelings are first shielded from polluted influences in our culture, and then liberated and allowed to control our conduct, may we posses true understanding and virtue. I also like those of Progressivism which is respect for individuality, relevant to the needs and interests of students. Along with these two theories I think educators need to include some perennialism which is a general, liberal, humanistic approach because we all need the basics and then build upon those to discover who we are and what we want to gain from education and life. I believe we have come to a point in our society where we have lost track of traditional American virtues and what our country was founded on. My wish as an educator would to be able to bring back some of the back to basics approach into the public school system. Letter vs. Txtn Free Essays

October 8, 2009 LW 102 9-11 am The Decease of Letter Writing Letter writing has all but disappeared in society today due to technologies such as e-mail and text messaging. Both of these technologies make the process of writing a letter and sending it through the mail much easier. Text messaging refers to messages being sent from one mobile phone to another. We will write a custom essay sample on Letter vs. Txtn or any similar topic only for you Order Now E-mail describes a system for sending and receiving messages over a computer network. Texting and E-mail have become part of people’s daily lives. Many people couldn’t imagine living without both. Even though texting and E-mailing are great things they are also making Americans lazy. When writing a letter you have to take the time to sit down and get your thoughts to process on paper. When writing letters you have to worry about correct spelling and vocabulary. Another big part of writing letters is grammar; it takes years sometimes to learn how to properly use the correct grammar and punctuation. Sometimes a major challenge in writing is being able to express an argument or a complete thought on paper. All of these things on top of technology contribute to why people don’t take the time to write letters anymore. E-mail also contributes to letter writing disappearing because even before texting became so popular there was e-mail. E-mail allows not only messages, but documents in little time. E-mail is convenient for PC users who are on the computer 24/7. E-mail allows you to send things like pictures and videos to another computer in less time it takes to mail a letter. E-mail is also cheap because most websites offer free e-mail addresses. Also most people who work in offices or from home rely on their e-mails very much to receive important information from their jobs quickly. Text messaging is another reason why letter writing has disappeared. Some people consider text messaging as their voice or identity. Texting is also one of the least expensive forms of communication and sends messages in less time than it takes to write. People text because it’s convenient and is like an extension of a PC. Unlike writing a letter, in text messaging you don’t have to worry about spelling because you can use short words and not have the correct spelling. Also in texting there is practically no grammar or punctuation. E-mail and text messaging are just two reasons why letter writing has deceased. These two technological advancements are much more convenient and easier to access. People are still communicating and sharing their original and personal thoughts with other people. So even though writing letters has disappeared somewhat people still express themselves in other ways. How to cite Letter vs. Txtn, Papers

Modern Music Essays - Marilyn Manson, Startup Cult, Thxa Soe

Modern Music Music has been around for thousands and thousands of years. The caveman had originally started some type of sounds in which branched off into the music that we listen to today. This prehistoric music was started by the cavemen in order for them to express themselves, and the others who listened were affected in the same way that people are affected by music today. For example, if someone is upset they will listen to something that will get them into a better mood, perhaps something mellow or soft. If they are happy, they will listen to something that is more energetic, and so on. After I interviewed four people--friends and family--I found out what type of music they listened to when they are upset, angry, or calm. Music touches people's souls, and gets the best or worst out of them. My friend Kyle said, ?When I am in a bad mood I listen to basically rap because it gets me hyped up to where I want to dance. Rap lets me get into a better mood where I can forget the problem or what I was mad at before.? He continues, ?No other music affects me as much as rap does because rappers put everything they have into their songs, but that is only my opinion.? Kyle has listened to rap since he was 13, and he actually got me interested into it. I never liked rap until I started to hang out with him, and I am now starting to enjoy it because of its' diversity that is involved in making the music. Each rapper has their own version of the world, and they express it through their music. -2- Not all rap music is good according to a Texas widow, who filed a lawsuit against Tupac Shakur. Her husband, a Texas state trooper, was allegedly shot to death by a man who stole a car. In the man's car a Tupac tape was found in the cassette player, and Tupac's music was allegedly to blame (Damean). Some people tend to take music too seriously, and end up making mistakes, and they have to suffer the consequences like that Texas man. Those people, who take the music too seriously, are not stable, and the music brings out the worst of them. On the other hand, people like Kyle have no problem with some of the lyrics that some rappers incorporate into their music, and end living happily with society. I asked Kyle's roommate, Tim what type music he listens to when he is in certain moods. He said, ?Sometimes when I am homesick I listen to Frank Sinatra because my mother and father listen to it all the time, so it reminds me of them.? He is also a big rap fan, but not as much as Kyle. Tim can listen to anything at any time, for instance, he could listen to Notorious BIG one minute then listen to Marilyn Manson the next. He continues, ?If I have the urge to get pumped up then I need something that is crazy and wild to get me in that mood, like White Zombie or some sort of heavy music.? There have also been lawsuits involved with such heavy metal like Marilyn Manson, Ozzy Osbourne, Slayer, and Judas Priest. Marilyn Manson's music had been to blame for the suicide of 13 year-old boy from California. Another family from California sued the band Slayer because their lyrics inspired three teenage boys to rape and murder their daughter. Ozzy Osbourne and Judas Priest had lawsuits filed against them claiming their lyrics drove teens to attempt suicide in the late 80's, but the cases were won by the artists -3- (Demean). Once again people or teenagers took the music too seriously, and they ended making stupid mistakes by doing so. These teenagers are allowed to listen to such music at an early age when they look up to certain entertainers like--Marilyn Manson. These teenagers need role models, and they end up looking the wrong way when they should be idolizing baseball and football players. They are at the crucial age when they are looking for a direction in life while trying to find themselves in the process. These

Rhubarb is not just a Vegetable

Rhubarb is not just a Vegetable Rhubarb is not just a Vegetable Rhubarb is not just a Vegetable By Maeve Maddox Reader Nancy was puzzled by a headline in her local paper: Colton code stirs ethics rhubarb. †¦ I have never seen rhubarb used this way. Any thoughts? NOTE: Colton is a town in California. It has a new ethics code for City Council members, one of whom has refused to sign it. My mother was a baseball fan so I knew the term rhubarb in the sense of a an argument between a player and the umpire before I ever tasted the vegetable. The figurative use of rhubarb also occurs in contexts outside baseball. Here are three definitions from the OED. rhubarb: n. A murmurous background noise, an indistinct conversation, esp. the repetition of the word ‘rhubarb’ by actors to represent such a conversation or the noise of a crowd. Usu. reduplicated. rhubarb: n. slang. Nonsense; worthless stuff. rhubarb: n. U.S. slang (orig. Baseball). A heated dispute, a row. Here are some examples from the web: Wedge, umpire Davidson laugh off Fridays rhubarb Its Rhubarb Time at the Ballpark Camera and Science Settle the Old Rhubarb (headline for an article about the disputed trajectory of a curve ball.) [a baseball player] and his 22-year-old brother were allegedly involved in a rhubarb in the lounge area of U.S. Airways Center †¦ The Dickson Baseball Dictionary offers several possible etymologies for the term, some more fanciful than others. Sports announcer Garry Schumacher is credited with its first use in a baseball context, but Red Barber (1908-1992) is the one who popularized it, both on the radio and in the title of the book Rhubarb in the Catbird Seat. In the context of background noise to suggest the presence of a crowd, rhubarb has a rival: walla, According the the Wikipedia article on the word, In American radio, film, television, and video games, walla is a sound effect imitating the murmur of a crowd in the background. A group of actors brought together in the post-production stage of film production to create this murmur is known as a walla group. Miles Kington: I say rhubarb, you say walla walla walla Apart from its baseball and theatrical uses, rhubarb is widely used in the general sense of dispute, disagreement, or altercation. Central Park Safari for Tasty Weeds Stirs Up Rhubarb (Park officials object to human foragers harvesting the vegetation [the woman] rushed to retrieve it, and a rhubarb ensued. Police hauled away both individuals from the meeting†¦ Chicago Tribune columnist Eric Zorn runs a feature called the Rhubarb Patch in which controversial social topics are argued by opposing advocates. A much-repeated explanation that traces rhubarb meaning background noise to Shakespearean stage practice seems to be an urban legend. Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? The Neurophysiology of Peripheral Neurogenic Pain Essay - 1

The Neurophysiology of Peripheral Neurogenic Pain - Essay Example This study focused on the aspects of peripheral neurogenic pain with regard to its neurophysiology. According to Hecke et al., epidemiology of pain involves the investigation of the distribution, as well as, the causes of pain and ill health and also how this information can be integrated into managing these predicaments. The epidemiology of pain can be addressed through paying much attention onto the widespread and intermittent pain disorders that are commonly experienced by persons in their daily lives. In focusing on the epidemiology of pain, the core question that might arise would be in relation whether the persistence of pain is a result of unremitting or never-ending ailment. Different Conflict Handling Styles in Management Essay

Different Conflict Handling Styles in Management - Essay Example Organizations use a variety of methods/style to handle workplace conflicts. However, five widely used conflict management styles include forcing, accommodating, avoiding, compromising, and collaborating. Let us discuss each of them in detail in order to get an understanding of the way organizations can use them to manage conflicts. Forcing is one of the main conflict management approaches. However, an observable fact is that employees and managers in organizations usually use this approach as the last choice when they are left with no other choice for reaching a resolution. If we talk about managers, we can say that they often use this approach to show power and authority. Even though this approach helps managers and employees in reaching an immediate resolution, but such resolutions put an unpleasant impact on the relationship that exists between people involved in a conflict. Accommodating is another approach towards conflict management in which one conflicting party listens and va lues the concerns of the other party involved in the conflict. Even though this approach is helpful in managing conflicts, but it also brings with it some negative points or consequences. For example, a conflicting party can ask for more favors and can put unlawful demands in front of the party showing accommodating approach for conflict resolution. Avoiding is another conflict management approach in which people avoid issues because of predicted negative consequences of getting involved in the issue.

Management Theory And Practice

Management Theory And Practice In the recent times there has been a significant change in the relationship between the theory and practice. In real, there is a transparency has been constructed around the theory and practice in the management work. A strategic move has been developed in the theory and practice in the management application (Ehrhart and Ziegert, 2005). However this is still some gap present in the management theory and practice due to the cultural difference within the companies. The relationship between the theory and practice is diversified into the education theory and actual management practice in the real corporate world. It is the time gap which created the difference between the management theory and practice (Byham, 2006). In the relevant decision, the stakeholder relation ship and other professions are closely related which can be understand only through the actual management practice. In this way the gap between the theory and management practice can not be bridged however it can be filled over a period of time (Ryan and Polyhart, 2000). At present the management colleges are emphasizing on the actual management practice through case study discussions in the class rooms so that they can bridge the gap between the theory and practice (Wilk and Cappelli, 2003). Since earlier when the management colleges were providing only the theoretical education, there has been created a big chaos in the companies where the newly developed mangers were unable to solve the actual management problem due to the gap between theory and practice. These managers could correlate the actual management problem with the theoretical aspect. The actual management situation is completely different from the bookish knowledge (Bend err et al, 2005). Therefore to bridge this gap it is essential to provide the actual knowledge through discussion related to actual management problem and case study discussion. Apart from this the workshop, lectures from the industry personnel and visit to the companies also help the newly developing managers to bridge the gap between the theory and practice. The managers would be able to capture the insight knowledge for the management and handling the issues within the company (Gupta, 2007). It will be a critical development between the management theories and management issues to resolve the management problem. There must be the relevant development required to To clearly understand the difference between theory into practice and practice into theory, this is necessary that they make the suitable application according their business and administration related subjects (Dipboye, 2004). The current notion related relevance can be seen all over the historical growth of the tools and accoutrement for the main intention of administration related research and good information about the area of education which is totally depended and creates good level of social production related knowledge (Pulakos and Schmitt, 2005). In case of generating the good information about administration functionalities, the procedures and institutional system is the best way and these tools are also described as the governing body and furthermore these tools developed by them in an equal time periods (Bernthal and Wellins, 2008). This was also argued in the last times by the authors that there is a lot of pressure in case of establishing the great relation with the adm inistration functionalities, the recent views about the relevance plan is need more efforts from their side and doing more effort for getting the level of demand if ease of access and responsibility both this are suits to their pledge (Ferrell and Skinner, 1988). 2. Explain the main difficulties in studying personality; how is this of importance to organizations? The personality of an individual is an important aspect of his look. In the view of Jarzabkowski (2004), the personality make the person feel that he is better and personality build the great level of attitude within the person and make the person determine about getting all the desired objectives and goals which are related to the organization thus it is the very essential part of the situational factors. We can describe the term personality as the stable set of bodily features and this features have the strong influences when someone face the all kind of communication otherwise in interaction with others. According to Rafaeli and Revelle (2006), for reducing the gap between practice and theory effectively, they have to the applying the following two strategies. In the first method they must try to develop the knowledge level simply and in the second method they must try to present the statement of the applicability for finalizing the practice related issues (Fields and Blum, 1997). This indicates that this issue is compelling in nature and this issue is related to obvious silence and peak administration journals for the administrative allegations. This also indicates the all solution about the working issues, practice, time and quality of theory and practice (Hough and Oswald, 2004). There is a deep relationship between the personality of an individual and respective knowledge. The root of the personality is emerged from the gene of the human which is encoded into the gene and also it is difficult to change. On the other hand few researches stated that the personality is dynamic and f lexible in nature despite being these are encoded into the human gene (Wilk and Cappelli, 2003). The personality can be change at desired level over a period of time however the personality can be sharpen and take the shape through the lifetime experience of the individual. According to Wallace and Vodanovich (2004), the personality of an individual is developed through the nature and surroundings however the mental representation of the individual is reflected in its behavior. Some of the theorist believes that the human development of personality is acclaimed by the belief and behavior of the individual, though these factors are critical to study and hence difficult to understand (Blanchar and Onton, 2005). Some findings of authors indicate that some kind of pattern and nature, behavior includes the normal manners and considerably makes better the view in the direction of the personality. In against the above finding this is described by the Jack Block who is a theorist, the self relationship related model and system for describe you self has a great role in finding the all necessary personality issues (Shadish et al, 2002). This can also be modified by using the terms such as organizing, motivation and knowledge about life defining because these terms have an important role in case of personality development. This is necessary in case of personality development that they must fix into the plans, models, assertion system and interior models from their knowledge about social life. Personality is the very important part of the organization because this is the thing that makes the people in the organization according to the organizational values, emotion, manner, stress, capability and ins piration (Revelle and Anderson, 1992). 3. In what ways can an understanding of motivation theory contribute to successful organizational working? Illustrate your key arguments with organizationally based examples. The view of organization Blanchar and Onton (2005) described that the term motivation consist purpose, aims and values related to organization and this is very essential aspect of motivation. And integrate these factors with motivation successfully works for the organization positively and this can support organization to increase its workers efficiency. But sometimes this is very difficult for them in case of perform this action successfully, and finally the result is that the motivation creates obstacles in the way of growth of the organization. In case of management of human resource in, motivation plays the very important role and taking care of the people needs in the organization is the key role of HR department of that organization, the level of satisfaction about job, and employee motivation and employee engagement into all the organization processes. The motivation of the employees completely connected with the organizational goals and objectives. So if the organization want s to increase working efficiency level of their people they must try to increase their motivation level (Ryan and Polyhart, 2000). In the view of Blanchar and Onton (2005), motivation is when an employee is eager to do something new and he has a desire to do his all efforts towards getting all the desired objectives and goals. There are many factors which have great effect on employee motivation such as pay level, working conditions, organizational nature, individual needs and leadership style. Employees feel better when he is working in friendly environment and its superiors and executives assist him in all conditions. If the organization deals with its each employee equally only then the organization motivate them and make them faithful (Wilk and Cappelli, 2003). They can increase motivation level of their employees through giving cash incentives, rewards and recognitions, try to find out their employeeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s problem with the working environment and then try to resolve these problems as soon as possible. When people feel better and they realize that they got success in achieving something than the y are motivated. The organization motivates its persons to increase their working efficiency because if the organization got success in case of motivate its person only than the organization leads its business to the great height. Fire-walking and outward-bound are two type of powerful things which have great motivational effect on employees. By using these strategies companies can motivate its people. The employee motivation is all about the contribution of the company to the employee in case of supporting the employee for getting the desired working level from them. If organization give importance to its employees only then the organization make the employee feel good. The organizations always take a discussion with its employees to know their needs and requirements. This is also the effective strategy in case of employee motivation. The organization also engage employee in their management planning process or take their suggestion for improvement. This action of organization work s positively for their business performance (Wallace and Vodanovich, 2004). This contribution from the company to their employees performs as a temptation and implicit and this also described by the X and Y theory of the motivation. Dipboye (2004) argued that motivation increasing methods have the great extent of use and this is totally depended on the knowledge of worker and all important values of organization. The term motivation run by the worker and the management of that organization assisted this term in many ways. Motivation is the very essential thing for organizational performance. If the employees are successfully motivated in the organization only then they work with more efficiency towards increasing the profitability in the business (Bernthal and Wellins, 2008). The organization can not take work from his labor as a machine. Providing money and incentives is not working all the times effectively, sometimes company do some thing new in case of motivates its employees. They try to make better relationship with their employees and provide them bet ter working condition. The increased level of motivation of employee forces them to do work with great working efficiency and follow the expected values in making the working environment better in the company. In case of getting the expected objectives and goals motivation is the very essential thing for the organization and takes the business towards the great level of heights (Pulakos and Schmitt, 2005). However, according to the above words it can be said that if the employees in the organization highly motivated it means that the organization is working properly in this direction and according to the corporation devotion. This also works in the direction of employeeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s expansion and growth with the average speed. The both incentive and prizes works differently because these both things have their own potentials and importance in case of generate motivation among employees (Bernthal and Wellins, 2008). In case of increasing employeeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s performance level and get the success into the work, motivation has the important role. The above statement is true and we can prove this by taking the different industry examples (Fields and Blum, 1997). We present the first example of Samsung; in 2004 the company made some promotions of its persons. But they have done mistake in this process, at that time the company was ignored some of its employees which also performed well at that time and which were working also on the same profile in the organization. When those ignored employees got information that their associates which were working with them on the same job profile was promoted and the company ignored them in this matter. So the result was that these employees were highly de-motivated by this action of the organization. And this de-motivation made them feel insecure in the organization (Bernthal and Wellins, 2008). They also not feel good and they started taking tension after this incident. These things were highly influenced their working efficiency. They do all the times mistakes in their work and cause of this the company have suffered huge loses in their business. The employees were also trying to leave the company and trying to get the new job with increased salary package. This was also working negatively for the organization. So when organization realized that they were suffering from loses in their business deals than they decide to find out the reason behind these loses. They want to know that what is going wrong inside the organization (Blanchar and Onton, 2005). They had given the responsibility of identifying the problem to its human resource department. So finally the human resource department found that recently they have done some promotions inside the organization. But they found that they ignored some capable employees in the organization. After that the HR department arranged a meeting with those ignored employees. During the discussion period with those employees they found that those employees were not happy with the promotional scheme of the organization. So in the last the organization was successfully resolved the problem by promoting those employees who were ignored last time. And now the company is running its business successfully in consumer electronic products industry. Also the company is getting all the desired level of sales and trying to making its business stronger in the marketplace.(Fields and Blum, 1997). The second example of Starbucks we are presenting here. In 2006 the company was launched his new scheme regarding bonus and job promotion. In this scheme they introduce new rules and regulations for getting job promotion and bonus. According to this scheme the employee can get bonus only when if he do something profitable for the company. In another sense if the employee bring some profit for the company only then he can get promotion or bonus (Nanda, 2007). But if in another situation the employees is not successful in doing this then organization will not promote them and provide them any king of bonus. So this plan of the organization forces the employees to do something new and profitable. Under this pressure employees in the organization starting doing mistakes in his jobs (Dipboye, 2004). They always give their focus on doing profitable things and because of this they completely forget their current job responsibilities. And in the last the result is that the company has suffer ed for huge loses because of these actions of employees. The company was also losing his customers at that time because the employees of the company were not able to deal with customers properly (Byham, 2006). They made the customer unhappy because they deal with customer with bad behavior. And all we know that every business is totally depend on its customers. Customer is the valuable asset of the business. So due to this the companyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s business was getting down day by day. The executives of the company were also being pressurized by this condition. They are trying to find out the reason behind these loses. Finally the company decided to review all his actions which he has done in previous days (Ehrhart and Ziegert, 2005). And then the company found that he recently launched a scheme about employee promotion and bonus. Then company realizes that this scheme is not working in the right direction for their business. So finally the organization has done some essential changes in this scheme. Now the promotion and bonus will be given at every year basis but the performance of employee must be considered during the promotional process (Wilk and Cappelli, 2003).

The Nandi Warriors

Deep in the Western Highlands of Africa lives a group of people known as the Nandi people. These people once lived a sedentary life as cattle herders and agriculturalists.   Interesting facts about the Nandi people include beliefs of male and female circumcision. In the past, large ceremonies were held every seven and one half years for male circumcision, which provided rite of initiation into adulthood (Wikipedia, p.1). While male circumcision is an everyday occurrence here in the U.S., female circumcision is not. Female circumcision was performed among the Nandi females in preparation for marriage. In addition to beliefs such as male/female circumcision, this culture also believed in female-female marriages (Wikipedia, p.1). The female-female marriages solved the problems of marriage failure, and served as a way to rescue young mothers from social and economic distress.   Born from this group of intriguing people were the Nandi warriors. Men young and old formed this protective group who later came to be known as one of the most notorious for slaying in Kenyan history (Kamau, p.1). The Nandi Warriors were successful in keeping out any possible threats to their people by limiting access into their territory. Many outsiders attempted intrusion in order to proceed with trading practices, and as a result, thousands were killed. Small groups of the Nandi warriors would lead intruding caravans deep into the Nandi lands, where, later in the evening, the warriors would massacre their â€Å"guests† (Bishop, p.1).   Only rarely did the warriors entertain trading  opportunities. Items up for trade included ivory and other coastal goods in exchange for cattle (Biship, p.1). While the Nandi Warriors’ protective measures would continue to last only a short time longer, the British’s own slaying of Nandi Warrior leader Kimnyole arap Sameoi would end slayings on the Nandi people’s behalf completely (Kamau, p. 1) in order to proceed with foreign rule. This defeat, enforced by the Imperial British of East Africa, would end the Nandi Resistance, and allow the peaceful beginnings to show face to the Nandi people, as well as surrounding areas. The Nandi were noted warriors (Bishop, p.1). After many battles, many victories and many defeats, the Nandi Warriors were feared by anyone who had reason to walk by their territory. Resistance to foreign rule would eventually weaken the opposition of the Nandi Warriors, and much needed peace would be restored in East Africa. Works Cited 1.Cultural Safari. 2005. Heavens Gate A Colossal Failure Essay - 1219 Words

Throughout history, there have been many instances of cults, many of which share the common characteristic of having corrupt leaders. For instance, Charles Manson led his cult in a homicidal spree, and David Koresh and Jim Jones convinced their followers to commit mass suicide. It is apparent that in cult history, leaders are the main cause of the tragedies that ensue. Heaven’s Gate, a religious cult, was founded on a mixture of Christian beliefs and a belief in UFOs. They stayed out of the public eye for many years until March 27, 1997. On this day, thirty-nine members of the cult committed suicide so that their souls could board a coming spaceship. Applewhite and Nettles believed themselves to be â€Å"the two ‘endtime’ witnesses mentioned in Revelation 11† (â€Å"Heaven’s Gate† Britannica par 2). These witnesses are two nonhuman beings who will appear on earth to prepare the way for the coming Lord. Applewhite called himself the reincarnation of Jesus, and Nettles was the â€Å"Heavenly Father† (Stewart par 2). These ideas stemmed from the duo’s belief that they were from the â€Å"Next Level† (Stewart par 2) and that only they had the ability to understand the Next Level. Because of this ability, their followers had no choice but to be completely reliant upon and trust â€Å"The Two† (â€Å"Heaven’s Gate† Britannica par 2), as they were referred to. (This nickname goes back to the two witnesses described earlier from Revelations 11 in the Bibl e.) The members of Heaven’s Gate followed their leaders blindly.
